Indian elephant ivory padukas

“the smoothly carved silhouettes subtly recall the form of a fish, a long-standing symbol of prosperity and auspiciousness in South Asian culture. The use of ivory identifies these sandals as luxury objects, historically associated with wealth, elite status, and ritual purity. In traditional contexts, ivory padukas were worn by royalty, ascetics, and religious figures, serving both practical and symbolic functions. ”
